IRISH CULTURAL SOCIETY MEETING - Sept. 21, 2008 The business meeting of the Irish Cultural Society was called to orderat 3:10pm. Sister Carmel led the invocation, and after our president, Bob Slattery, said a few words of greeting, the Pledge of Allegiance was led by vice-president, Lou Kelley, who is always in good voice. Our treasurer, Bob Barron, gave the monthly report on the ICS finances. He had several copies of the treasurer’s report to hand out to interested members. Bob explained how each year we seem to lose more money, especially given the expense of bringing in the band from Boston for our St. Patrick’s Dance; however, the proposed budget was approved by the general membership with very little discussion. The minutes of the previous meeting in June were read by the secretary and approved as read. Membership chair, Kay Delaney, reminded members that October 1st is the date by which all members should be paid up and their information updated for this coming year in the Irish Cultural Society. Librarian Susan Feeley updated the members on recent acquisitions for the ICS library, which includes Irish America magazines, Celtic music CDs, and the Sister Fidelma mystery books. Program chair, Sheila Carolla, talked about the various ideas she has had for our meetings this coming year and those which she has already confirmed. We have an author, a Belleek collector (one of our own members, Helena Ryan), and several musical groups on the schedule for upcoming meetings. There is no meeting in December, as we all meet for the holiday dinner instead. This year the dinner is a joint function with the Harp and Shamrock group. Lou Kelley explained how to access the information about the party on our website so that reservations and payment can be made in a timely fashion to Ethna Torres, our social chair. The business meeting was adjourned at 3:25 pm. A musical program of Irish-themed music was provided by the Garner Middle School Orchestra, conducted by Phyllis Malone, their orchestra teacher. A special song was played just for Sister Carmel to commemorate her fifty years of service with the Presentation sisters. The orchestra performed for almost an hour, and many of their family members were in attendance at the meeting. Respectfully submitted, Susan Feeley Secretary |
