Spring 2004 IRISH PERCEPTIONS
VISUAL ARTS IN IRELAND
by
BRIAN KENNEDY
San Antonio will be one of ten cities across the United States
in which the internationally recognized Irish artist Brian
Kennedy will speak during the spring 2004 Irish Perceptions
Tour. Presented by the Irish American Cultural Institute, New
Jersey, the event will be sponsored in San Antonio by The Irish
Cultural Society of San Antonio, Inc,
The visual arts in Ireland have recently gained much wider
recognition both at home and internationally. Brian Kennedy's
lecture will use both his own work and work by Irish and
international artists that he has curated to highlight this
newfound confidence in the visual arts. With his own work he
will show how it is possible for an Irish artist to travel to
different counties, show how Irish work is now accepted and
how Irish artists can benefit from experiencing other cultures.
Born in Belfast in 1949, Brian Kennedy earned his Diploma and
Higher Diploma in Fine Arts from Belfast College of Art. Since
then he has exhibited widely in Europe and North America and
has held residencies in Ireland, Italy, Scotland and the USA,
most recently as the Arts Council of Northern Ireland's fellow
at The British School in Rome. His main focus has always been
large scale site-specific installations. He has also worked
on photography, painting and performing arts.
The event was free and open to the public.
