First Meeting of the
Irish Cultural Society
of
San Antonio Texas, Inc
The first meeting was called to order by Father Nolan on October
19, 1975. He welcomed more than 100 people to St. Gregory the
Great hall. Msgr. Patrick Murray gave the opening prayer.
Fr. Nolan then gave a brief history of the society from its inception
last March (1975) up to the present time. He explained the interest
of the founding members who got together several times and worked
long hours to develop a constitution and outline goals and objectives
for the organization.
Because of the program for the day, the chairman felt that a change
in the regular agenda was necessary, so he asked the publicity
chairman, Thomas Macken, to come forward to introduce our
distinguished guest speaker. After a rather lengthily introduction,
Dr. Eoin McKiernan, president and founder of the Irish American
Cultural Society of St. Paul, Minn., was presented to the audience.
Dr. McKiernan delighted all with a magnificent and scholarly speech
titled "The Irish Experience in America." (Copies of the speech will
be available upon request at the Nov. 16th (1975) meeting).
Fr. Nolan thanked Dr. McKiernan for his presentation and for all
he had shared with us during his stay in San Antonio. After a coffee
break the meeting continued.
The next item of business was the election of officers. Sister Anna
Teresa, a member of the nominating committee came forward to
present the candidates . After each person had received his/her
ballots the candidates for the offices of president, vice president,
secretary and treasurer, were presented to the voters. Nominations
were requested from the floor. There were none. Since there was
only one name for the office of treasurer a motion was made and
seconded to accept the name of Vera Ryan as treasurer. The motion
was carried. While the ballots for president, vice president and
secretary were being counted, the officers were presented to the
voters to fill the following offices: Two members at large for the
board, the standing committee of finance, membership and public
relations. The chairman of the nominating committee asked for
additional nominations from the floor. There were none. Fr. Conor
McGrath then made a motion to accept the slate of officers as
presented. Fr. Noel Brosnan seconded the nomination and the motion
carried.
The offices of president, vice president and secretary were
announced: Fr. Terence Nolan - president,
Fr. Michael McManus - vice president,
Sr. Carmel O'Callaghan - secretary.
Fr. Nolan thanked Sr. Anna for her efficiency in running the elections.
He also thanked those who took registration, provided refreshments,
and decorated the hall, Fr. O'Gorman for use of the hall,
Tom Macken for the good job as publicity chairman and
Sr. Carmel for her secretarial work.
The date of November 16 (1975) was set for the next meeting.
The meeting adjourned at 4:45 p.m.
